The Monster Under the Bed… Is a Friend!

Every night, when the lights went off, Liam felt a funny feeling in his tummy. Liam was seven years old. He liked sunny days, cartoons, and chocolate milk. But he did not like bedtime. Bedtime was quiet. Bedtime was dark. And bedtime made Liam think about one scary thing: The space under his bed.

Liam lay under his blanket and listened. Tap… scratch… bump… His eyes opened wide.

“Mom?” Liam called softly.

Mom came into the room and smiled. “What is it, sweetheart?”

“I think there is a monster under my bed,” Liam whispered.

Mom looked under the bed and laughed gently. “Nothing here but dust and socks,” she said. She kissed Liam’s forehead and turned on the night light. But when Mom left, the noises came back. Sniff… shuffle… tap…

Liam pulled his blanket up to his nose. “What if the monster is real?” he thought.

The next night, Liam had an idea. “I will look,” he said bravely. He held his flashlight tight and slowly leaned over the bed. “Hello?” he said.

Two big eyes blinked back at him. Liam gasped. But the eyes were not scary. They were round and shiny and curious. A small voice spoke. “Um… hi.”

Liam blinked. “You can talk?”

A fluffy creature crawled out from under the bed. It was short and round. It had soft blue fur, floppy ears, and a tiny tail that wagged when it moved. “I’m Milo,” the creature said. “Please don’t scream.”

Liam stared. “You’re the monster?” he asked.

Milo nodded. “Yes… but I’m not scary. I think.” Milo tripped over a toy car and fell on his back. “Oof!”

Liam laughed. That was the first time he laughed at bedtime. “You’re silly,” Liam said.

Milo smiled. “I try.”

Liam sat on the floor. “Why do you live under my bed?”

Milo looked sad. “I get lonely. Monsters are supposed to hide under beds, but no one ever talks to us.”

Liam felt warm inside. “You can talk to me.”

Milo’s eyes sparkled. “Really?”

“Yes,” Liam said. “But no scary stuff.”

“I promise,” Milo said. “I’m scared of scary stuff too.” They both laughed.

That night, Milo showed Liam his favorite game. “Hide-and-seek!” Milo cheered. Milo hid behind the curtains. Liam counted. “One… two… three…”

Milo giggled so loudly that Liam found him right away. “You’re bad at hiding,” Liam said.

“I get excited,” Milo said. They played quietly so Mom wouldn’t hear.

Soon, Liam felt sleepy. “I have to sleep now,” Liam said.

Milo nodded. “I’ll go back under the bed.”

“Good night, Milo,” Liam said.

“Good night, Liam,” Milo replied. That night, Liam slept with a smile.

The next night, Milo was waiting. “Guess what!” Milo said. “I learned a new hiding place!”

Milo hid inside Liam’s toy box. But he sneezed. “ACHOO!” Glitter puffed into the air.

“You sneeze glitter?” Liam laughed.

“Only when I’m nervous,” Milo said.

Every night, they talked and played. Milo told stories about the monster world. Monsters there were afraid of vacuum cleaners and loud music. “One vacuum scared me for a whole week,” Milo said. Liam laughed so hard he fell back on his pillow.

One night, something scary happened. The power went out. The room went dark. Liam’s heart beat fast. “I don’t like the dark,” he whispered.

Milo crawled closer. “It’s okay,” he said softly. Milo held Liam’s hand. It felt warm and fuzzy. “I’m here,” Milo said.

Liam took a deep breath. “I’m not scared,” Liam said slowly. “Because I’m not alone.”

The lights came back on. Liam smiled. From that night on, bedtime was different. No fear. No worries. Just stories, laughs, and friendship.

In the morning, Milo always went back under the bed. “See you tonight,” Milo would say. “Always,” Liam replied.

One day, Liam told Mom, “I’m not scared of monsters anymore.” Mom smiled. “That’s wonderful.”

She did not know about Milo. But that was okay. Some friends are secret.

That night, Liam whispered, “Thank you for being my friend.”

Milo smiled in the dark. “Thank you for being brave.”

And under the bed, a monster slept happily.
