High in the tall green trees of a big, big jungle, there lived a little monkey named Miko.

Miko had soft brown fur. He had a long curly tail. And he had bright, bouncy eyes that loved to look around.

Playful baby monkey swings happily from leafy jungle vine above tropical waterfall and pink hibiscus flowers

Miko loved to swing. He loved to jump. And most of all, he loved to sing

Every day, Miko would say, "La la la! Singing is the best!"

One evening, the sun climbed down behind the tallest palm trees. The sky turned soft orange. Then rose pink. Then dark, dark blue.

Miko sat high on his favorite branch. He looked all around the jungle.

Everyone was getting sleepy.

The parrots were tucking their feathers under their wings.

The little frogs were curling up on their lily pads.

The baby elephants were leaning against their mamas.

Miko yawned a big monkey yawn. "It's bedtime for the whole jungle," he said.

But Miko was not sleepy yet. Not one tiny bit.

"I know!" he said. "I will sing a bedtime song for everyone!"

He took a big breath.

"LA LA LA LA LA!" he sang loudly.

The parrots opened one eye. "Shhh, Miko! Too loud!"

Miko blushed. "Oops. Sorry."

He tried again. This time he sang even louder. "OOO-OOO-OOO-AAH-AAH-AAH!"

The little frogs jumped in surprise. "Ribbit! Please, Miko!"

Miko felt sad. His tail drooped down.

"I only wanted to make a bedtime song," he said. "But mine is too silly and loud."

Just then, an old wise firefly floated by. Her name was Zuzu. She glowed like a small golden lantern.

"Blink, blink! Why so sad, little Miko?" asked Zuzu.

"I want to sing a sleepy song for the jungle," said Miko. "But my song is too loud. Nobody wants to listen."

Zuzu smiled her gentle glowing smile. "Oh, sweet Miko. A sleepy song is not loud. A sleepy song is very, very soft."

"Soft?" said Miko. His ears wiggled.

"Yes," said Zuzu. "Would you like to hear a secret?"

"Yes please!" whispered Miko.

Zuzu whispered even softer. "The whole jungle is already singing a sleepy song. You just have to listen."

Miko went very still.

He closed his eyes. He listened.

Whoo, whoo — that was the soft owl.

Rustle, rustle — that was the wind in the leaves.

Drip, drop — that was the little stream nearby.

Chirp, chirp — that was the tiny cricket.

"Oh!" whispered Miko. "The jungle IS singing! It's a beautiful bedtime song!"

"Yes," said Zuzu. "And now you can join in — very, very softly."

Miko took a tiny, gentle breath. He started to hum.

Hmmm, hmmm, hmmm.

His hum was as soft as a feather. As soft as a cloud. As soft as a mama's kiss.

The parrots smiled in their sleep.

The frogs curled up cozier.

The baby elephants breathed slow and deep.

"You did it, Miko," whispered Zuzu. "Your song helped the whole jungle drift into dreams."

Miko smiled his biggest monkey smile.

He curled his long tail around his branch. He hugged himself gently.

Above him, the moon peeked through the leaves. It shined a soft silver light on Miko's little nose.

Hmmm, hmmm, hmmm — Miko kept humming softly.

"Goodnight, little Miko," whispered Zuzu.

"Goodnight, Zuzu," yawned Miko. "Goodnight, jungle. Goodnight, moon."

His bouncy eyes felt heavy, heavy, heavy.

He closed one eye. Then he closed the other.

The jungle sang softly all around him — a lullaby of leaves, and wind, and gentle little sounds.

And soon, little Miko the Monkey was fast, fast asleep.

Even in his dreams, he kept humming. Hmmm, hmmm, hmmm. A soft jungle song for all the sleepy dreamers around the whole wide world.

Sweet dreams, Miko. Sweet dreams, little monkey.

~ The End ~

Moral of the Story

The best songs are not always the loudest. Sometimes the softest sounds are the most beautiful. When we listen quietly to the world, we hear how full of gentle music it really is and we become part of that music too
