Ember was a little baby dragon.

He had soft orange scales. He had tiny wings. And he had the cutest little tail that wiggled when he was happy.

Story

But Ember had one big problem.

He was afraid of the dark.

Every night, when the sun went down, the sky turned black. The stars came out. The moon glowed big and white.

Most baby dragons loved the night. They flew and played and laughed under the stars.

But not Ember.

Ember hid under his blanket.

Ember said, "The dark is scary. The dark is too big. The dark is too quiet."

Story

His mama came to him. She had big warm wings. She sat next to Ember on his bed.

Mama said, "What is wrong, little one?"

Ember said, "Mama, I do not like the dark. It is scary!"

Mama smiled and said, "Oh, Ember. Let me show you something."

Story

Mama walked to the window. She opened it wide.

The cool night air came in. It smelled like flowers and pine trees.

Mama said, "Look up, Ember. What do you see?"

Ember looked up. He saw tiny little lights. Hundreds and hundreds of them.

Ember said, "Stars!"

Mama nodded, "Yes! Stars. They are always there. Every single night. They watch over you while you sleep."

Ember looked at the stars. They twinkled. They did look friendly.

But he was still a little bit scared.

Ember said, "But Mama, it is still very dark everywhere else."

Story

Just then, something magical happened.

A tiny firefly flew in through the open window. It glowed green and gold. It flew around Ember's head and blinked. Blink. Blink. Blink.

Ember giggled.

Ember said, "Oh! A light! A tiny little light!"

The firefly seemed to say, "Hello, little dragon! I am here!"

Story

Then more fireflies came. Five. Ten. Twenty!

They flew all around Ember's room. They made the whole room glow. Soft gold. Soft green. Soft and warm.

Ember laughed and said, "Mama! Look! Little lights! So many little lights!"

Mama laughed too, "The dark is not empty, Ember. The dark is full of little lights. You just have to look for them."

Ember watched the fireflies dance. They went up and down. Round and round. They never stopped glowing.

He felt something warm in his tummy. Not scared. Something nice.

He felt safe.

Story

Then Papa came in. Papa was a big dragon with deep red scales.

Papa said, "Ember! You are still awake?"

Ember said, "Papa! Look at the fireflies!"

Papa looked. He smiled a big dragon smile.

Papa said, "Ah yes. The fireflies. Do you know what they do at night?"

Ember shook his head and said, "No. What?"

Papa sat down and said, "They light the way. For all the little ones who are scared. They are like tiny night guards. They never let the dark feel too dark."

Story

Ember thought about that. Tiny night guards. Lighting the way.

He liked that very much.

Mama tucked Ember into his soft bed. His blanket smelled like warm cinnamon.

The fireflies floated near the window. They blinked slowly. Like little sleepy eyes.

The stars outside still shone. Bright and steady.

The moon was big and round. Like a friendly face.

Story

Ember said softly, "Mama? Is the dark always like this?"

Mama kissed his head, "Yes, my little one. The dark is just the night in its pajamas. It is resting, just like you."

Ember smiled.

Story

The night was resting. Just like him.

That made sense. That felt nice.

He looked at the fireflies one last time.

He whispered, "Good night, little lights."

And the fireflies blinked back. Blink. Blink. Blink.

Story

Ember closed his eyes.

He did not pull his blanket over his head.

He just lay there. Warm. Safe. Peaceful.

And for the very first time…

Baby Ember was not afraid of the dark.

Story

He smiled in his sleep.

And outside, the fireflies kept on glowing.

All night long.

Story

~ The End ~

Moral of the Story

The dark can feel very big and very scary. But it is never truly empty.

Look closely you will always find a little light. A star. A firefly. A nightlight. Or the warm glow of someone who loves you.

Fear does not go away by hiding. It goes away when we look at it gently and find that it is not as scary as we thought.

It is okay to feel scared. Everyone does, even dragons!

Talk to someone you love. They will help you find the light.

The night is just the world resting and you can rest too.

From the LitsLib Dragon World

Hello, wonderful parents and little readers!

Fear of the dark is one of the most common experiences for children aged 3 to 6. It is completely normal. It is not something to dismiss, it is something to gently explore together.

We wrote Ember's story to show children that feeling scared is okay, and that talking about our fears especially with someone we love makes them smaller.

We also wanted to fill the dark with wonder. Fireflies. Stars. A glowing moon. The night is not empty. It is alive with quiet magic, if we only take a moment to look.

Here are a few things you can try with your child after reading:

Star Spotting: Go outside at night and count the stars together.

Nightlight Magic: Let your child pick their own special nightlight and it becomes their 'firefly'.

Talk It Out: Ask your child: 'What makes you feel safe at night?' Their answers might surprise you.

Be Their Dragon: Like Ember's mama, your presence is the biggest comfort of all.

Thank you for reading with your little one today. Every story you share plants a seed of love, courage, and imagination.

With warm dragon hugs,

The LitsLib Dragon World
