Spark was a baby dragon with green scales and a very curious nose.
He loved sniffing things. Flowers. Rocks. Mud. Old logs. Freshly baked bread from far, far away.
His nose was always twitching. Always discovering. Always leading him somewhere new.

One bright morning, Spark was sniffing around the garden when he smelled something completely different.
Not flowers. Not mud. Not bread.
Something warm. Something fluffy. Something alive.
He followed his nose around the big rose bush.
And stopped.

Sitting on the other side of the rose bush was the strangest creature Spark had ever seen.
It was small. It was round. It had four tiny legs and two very floppy ears.
It was covered completely covered in soft golden fur.
And it was looking at Spark with two big brown eyes.

They stared at each other.
Spark had never seen anything like this before.
He leaned forward and sniffed. The creature smelled like warm sunshine and something biscuity.
The creature leaned forward too. It sniffed Spark's nose. Then it sneezed.
ACHOO!
Spark jumped back. The creature jumped back.

They stared at each other again.
Then very slowly the creature's tail began to wag.
Back and forth. Back and forth. Like a tiny furry windmill.
Spark whispered, "What are you?"
The creature opened its mouth. Out came a sound Spark had never heard.
WOOF!
Spark's eyes went wide. He looked at his own mouth. He tried to make the same sound.
Spark said, "Woof?"
It came out more like a puff of smoke. But he tried.
The creature wagged its tail even faster.

Spark ran inside to find Mama.
Spark said breathlessly, "Mama! Mama! There is a creature in the garden! It is golden and fluffy and it goes WOOF and its tail does this"
He wiggled his bottom back and forth to show her.
Mama laughed.
Mama said, "That is a puppy, Spark. A baby dog."
Spark said, "A dog? What is a dog?"
Mama said, "Dogs are wonderful. They are kind and playful and very, very friendly. Go say hello properly."
Spark said with big eyes, "But Mama it is not a dragon. It is very different from me."

Mama smiled, "The best friends often are."
Spark went back outside.
The puppy was still there. It had not moved. It was sitting very patiently, tail still wagging hopefully.
Spark walked up slowly. Very slowly.
He stopped right in front of the puppy.
The puppy looked up at him with those big brown eyes.

Spark said carefully, "Hello. I am Spark. I am a dragon."
The puppy tilted its head to one side. One ear flopped forward.
It was the most adorable thing Spark had ever seen.
Spark said, "I do not know what you are called. Can you tell me your name?"
The puppy barked once. Short and bright.

Spark nodded seriously, "Woof. I will call you Woof."
The puppy wagged its tail so hard its whole bottom wiggled.
It seemed to like that very much.
Spark sat down. Woof sat down.
They looked at each other.

Spark said, "Do you want to play?"
Woof leapt up immediately. He ran in a circle. Then he ran back and looked at Spark.
Spark laughed, "I think that means yes!"
They played chase around the rose bush. Woof was fast surprisingly fast for something so small and round. Spark had to flap his little wings just to keep up.

They played sniff-the-garden together. Woof sniffed everything too. They sniffed the same flower at the same time and bumped noses. Both of them jumped back. Then both of them giggled one with a bark, one with a puff of smoke.

They found a big stick and Spark picked it up in his mouth. He dropped it in front of Woof. Woof picked it up and ran away with it.
Spark said, "Hey! That was for you to bring back!"
Woof dropped the stick. I looked at it. Picked it up again. Ran in another circle.
Spark said, "I do not think you understand the game. That is okay. We can make a new game."

By lunchtime they were both tired. They lay down in the shade of the big oak tree. Side by side. Woof's golden fur touches Spark's green scales.
They were very different. Furry and scaly. Barky and smoky. Four legs and two legs and two wings.
But right now, lying in the cool shade they felt exactly the same.
Happy. Tired. Full of a good morning.
Papa came out with two bowls of water. He put one in front of each of them.
Papa said, "I see you have made a friend, Spark."
Spark said proudly, "His name is Woof. He goes WOOF and his tail does the windmill thing and he is very fast and he does not understand the stick game but that is okay."
Papa said, "He sounds wonderful."
Spark said, "He is. He is nothing like me. But he is my favourite."

That afternoon, a little girl came to the garden gate. She had red boots and two pigtails.
She said, "Has anyone seen a puppy? Golden fur? Very waggy tail?"
Spark looked at Woof. Woof looked at Spark.
Woof's tail began wagging toward the little girl. He loved her. That was very clear.
Spark walked to the gate. He opened it.

Spark said, "His name is Woof. He is very fast and very friendly. We played all morning."
The little girl knelt down and hugged Woof tight.
She said, "His real name is Biscuit. But Woof is also a very good name."
Spark said, "Biscuit. He does smell a little like biscuits."
The little girl laughed. It was a bright, warm sound.

She said, "I am Rosie. Would you like to play with us again tomorrow?"
Spark looked at Woof at Biscuit one more time.
Biscuit wagged his tail. Woof. Woof woof.
Spark smiled and said, "Yes please. Same time. Same rose bush."
That evening, Spark lay in bed thinking about the day.
About golden fur and green scales. About barks and smoke puffs. About a stick game that made no sense at all.

About how the best part of the whole day was finding someone completely different and discovering they were a perfect friend.
Tomorrow could not come fast enough.
~ The End ~
The best friends are not always the ones who look like us or sound like us. Sometimes the most wonderful friendships come from the most unexpected places.
Being open to someone different curious instead of scared, kind instead of shy is how we find the friendships that surprise us most beautifully.
Different does not mean scary, different can be wonderful.
The best friendships often come from the most unexpected places.
Be curious about people who are different from you they might become your favourite.
Let's see how much you remember!
1. What is the baby dragon's name in this story?
2. What colour are Spark's scales?
3. What special thing did Spark love to do with his nose?
4. What did the puppy look like when Spark first saw it?
5. What sound did the puppy make when Spark tried to talk to it?
6. What name did Spark give to the puppy?
7. What did Spark do when Woof ran away with the stick?
8. Where did Spark and Woof rest at lunchtime?
9. What was the puppy's real name?
10. What did Spark agree to do when Rosie asked?
Answer these in your own words:
How did Spark first discover the puppy in the garden?
He followed his nose around the rose bush after smelling something warm, fluffy and alive different from anything he had smelled before.
What did Mama say when Spark said the puppy was very different from him?
Mama smiled and said: 'The best friends often are.'
Describe two games that Spark and Woof played together.
They played chase around the rose bush, and they sniffed the garden together including bumping noses on the same flower. They also tried a stick game that did not quite work.
How were Spark and Woof different from each other?
Spark had green scales, two legs and two wings, and made smoke puffs. Woof had golden fur, four legs, floppy ears, and went woof. They were very different on the outside.
What did Spark think about at bedtime at the end of the story?
He thought about golden fur and green scales, barks and smoke puffs, the stick game and how finding someone completely different turned out to be the best thing that happened all day.

Hello, wonderful parents and little readers!
One of the most important things we can teach young children is that 'different' is not something to fear, it is something to be curious about. Children who learn early to approach unfamiliar people, animals, and experiences with openness rather than anxiety grow into adults who build richer, kinder worlds.
We gave Spark a puppy for a friend not another dragon because we wanted the story to celebrate exactly that: friendship that crosses every expected boundary. Furry and scaly. Barky and smoky. And yet perfectly happy together under the same oak tree.
We also loved adding Rosie, a human girl as a gentle surprise. Dragon World is big enough for everyone. That felt important to say.
Here are a few things you can try with your child after reading:
Animal Curiosity: If your child has not met a puppy or dog, look at pictures together. What do they notice? What would they name it?
Different Friends: Ask: 'Do you have a friend who is different from you? What do you like about them?'
Draw Spark and Woof: Let your child draw both characters side by side. Green scales and golden fur are a perfect pair!
Say Hello First: Practice with your child: how do you say hello to someone new? Spark's way, slow, gentle, and kind is a great model.
Thank you for reading with your little one today. Every story that opens a child's heart a little wider is a gift to the whole world.
With warm dragon hugs,
The LitsLib Dragon World
