Far, far away, in a golden grass savanna, there lived a little giraffe named Jax.

Jax had a long, long neck. He had big soft eyes with long eyelashes. And he had gentle brown spots that looked like tiny leaves.

Adorable fluffy baby giraffe with big dark eyes, rosy cheeks and soft brown spots stands happily on a mossy hilltop among daisies and ferns, sparkling forest stream and misty mountain waterfall glowing in warm golden sunlight behind her

Jax loved the sky. He loved to look up, up, up. And most of all, he loved the STARS.

Every night, Jax would say, "Twinkle, twinkle! Stars are the best!"

One evening, the sun went to sleep behind the tall grass. The sky turned soft orange. Then peachy pink. Then dark, dark blue.

Jax stretched his long neck high, high, high. His head peeked above the acacia trees.

"Time to count the stars!" said Jax happily.

The first star popped out. Twinkle!

"One!" said Jax.

Then another. Twinkle, twinkle!

"Two!" said Jax.

Soon the whole sky was full of stars. Twinkle, twinkle, twinkle!

"Three... four... five... six!" counted Jax.

He counted more and more. "Seven, eight, nine, ten!"

But there were still SO many stars.

Jax kept counting. "Eleven, twelve, thirteen..."

His neck felt a little tired. His eyes felt a little heavy.

But he kept going. "Twenty... thirty... fifty..."

There were still more stars!

Jax gave a big giraffe sigh. "Oh dear. There are too many stars to count."

Just then, a tiny little moth fluttered by. Her wings shimmered like silver dust. Her name was Milo.

"Flutter, flutter! Why are you still awake, little Jax?" asked Milo.

"I am trying to count all the stars," said Jax. "But there are too many! I can never finish."

Milo landed softly on Jax's nose. She giggled a tiny giggle.

"Oh, sweet little Jax. You do not have to count all the stars."

"I don't?" said Jax.

"No," said Milo kindly. "Would you like to know a secret?"

"Yes please!" said Jax. His long ears wiggled.

Milo whispered, "The stars are counting you too."

"They are?" said Jax. His eyes grew big.

"Yes," said Milo. "Every night, the stars twinkle down and count all the sleepy babies. One little giraffe. One little moth. One little bunny. One little child."

Jax looked up at the twinkling stars. They seemed to blink softly at him.

"Are they counting me right now?" whispered Jax.

"They are," said Milo. "And they will keep twinkling until you close your sleepy eyes."

Jax smiled a big giraffe smile.

He lay down slowly in the soft grass. His long legs curled up. His long neck curved into a cozy shape.

Above him, the stars twinkled softly.

"One little Jax," Jax whispered. "That's me."

Twinkle, twinkle.

"The stars see me," said Jax. "I don't have to count them. They count me."

Milo the moth fluttered next to him. She sparkled like a tiny lantern.

"Goodnight, little Jax," she whispered.

"Goodnight, Milo," yawned Jax. "Goodnight, stars. Goodnight, moon."

His long eyelashes fluttered.

He closed one big eye. Then he closed the other.

The savanna was soft and quiet. The stars twinkled just for him.

And soon, little Jax the Giraffe was fast, fast asleep.

Up in the dark blue sky, the stars kept twinkling. One for each sleepy little dreamer around the whole wide world.

Sweet dreams, Jax. Sweet dreams, little giraffe.
