Deep in the misty mountains, in a green bamboo forest, there lived a little panda named Pip.
Pip had round black ears. He had a soft white tummy. And he had little black patches around his eyes, like tiny sleepy smudges.

Pip loved bamboo. He loved to munch it. He loved to climb it. And most of all, he loved to nap in it!
Every day, Pip would say, "Yum, yum, crunch! Bamboo is the best!"
One evening, the sun tucked itself behind the mountains. The sky turned soft purple. Then dusty pink. Then dark, dark blue.
Pip yawned a big panda yawn. "Aaah-hoooo. Time for bed," he said.
He climbed into his cozy bamboo nest. His bed was made of soft leaves. His pillow was made of moss.
Pip closed his eyes. He waited to feel sleepy.
But then... shhh, shhh, shhh.
The bamboo was making sounds!
Pip opened one eye. "Oh no. What is that noise?"
Shhh, shhh, rustle, rustle.
Pip opened both eyes. "The bamboo is too loud! I cannot sleep!"
He sat up in his little nest. His ears twitched. His nose wiggled.
Just then, a tiny firefly floated by. Her name was Lulu. She glowed like a little star.
"Blink, blink! Why are you awake, little Pip?" asked Lulu.
"The bamboo is making noise," said Pip sadly. "Shhh and rustle and swish. I cannot sleep."
Lulu smiled her soft glowing smile. "Oh, sweet little Pip. That is not noise at all."
"It's not?" asked Pip. His head tilted like a curious puppy.
"No," said Lulu kindly. "That is the bamboo singing you a lullaby."
"A lullaby?" whispered Pip.
"Yes," said Lulu. "Listen carefully. The bamboo has a song, just for pandas at bedtime."
Pip lay back down in his nest. He closed his eyes tight. He listened.
Shhh, shhh, whisper, whisper. Swish, swish, sway.
"Oh!" said Pip. "I can hear it! The bamboo is singing!"
"What does it sound like?" asked Lulu.
Pip listened again. "It sounds like... a soft wind song. Like leaves telling stories. Like the forest saying goodnight."
Lulu blinked happily. "That's right, little Pip. Every night, the bamboo sings only for the sleepy pandas."
"For me?" said Pip.
"For you," said Lulu. "And for all the sleepy pandas in the whole forest. And for all the sleepy children around the world too."
Pip smiled his biggest panda smile.
He snuggled deeper into his soft leaf bed. His moss pillow felt cozy. His bamboo blanket felt warm.
Outside, the bamboo swayed. Shhh, shhh, sway, sway.
"Thank you, bamboo," whispered Pip. "Thank you for singing me to sleep."
The bamboo swayed a little more. Shhh, shhh. It was like a soft "you're welcome."
Lulu the firefly floated closer. She glowed a warm, gentle light on Pip's little nose.
"Goodnight, little Pip," she whispered.
"Goodnight, Lulu," yawned Pip. "Goodnight, bamboo. Goodnight, moon."
Pip's eyes felt heavy, heavy, heavy.
He closed one sleepy eye. Then he closed the other.
His fluffy paws curled up. His round tummy went up and down, up and down.
And soon, little Pip the Panda was fast, fast asleep.
Outside, the bamboo kept singing. Shhh, shhh, whisper, sway. A soft lullaby for all the sleepy little pandas.
Sweet dreams, Pip. Sweet dreams, little panda.
